Abstract in English
Seção de Botânica (Botanical Sector) was created in Butantan Institute in connection with the development of Horto Oswaldo Cruz and activities dedicated to the study of flora. From 1917 to 1938, Seção de Botânica was coordinated by the botanist Frederico Carlos Hoehne and was, in different moments, linked to Museu Paulista (Paulista Museum) and to the Instituto Biológico de Defesa Agrícola e Animal (Biological Institute of Agriculture and Animal Defense). Considering the analysis of Seção de Botânica under Hoehnes management, the goals of correlated institutions and the established scientific practices, the research found both mobility and permanence; on the one hand, Seção de Botânica transitioned among different São Paulo State institutions, leading to mobility not only in terms of collections but also managers and staff; on the other hand, the fact that Hoehne remained in the leading role for almost twenty years allowed for continuity in scientific practices, notwithstanding the peculiarities and purposes of each place. This study is linked to the discussion on history of sciences, which offers theoretical and methodological support to the investigation; and is based on the essential understanding that the scientific knowledge is produced under accurate contexts of time and place. Scientific institutions and scientific practices contributed to outline the analysis, which focused on Hoehnes work in São Paulo institutions. In terms of scientific practice, the development and organization of botanical gardens, field trips, herb gardens and botanical exhibitions were privileged, together with public consultations and exchanges and the conservation of Estação Biológica do Alto da Serra. Such activities were permeated by Hoehnes preferences and convictions about botany, society and the role of the state, highlighting the importance of the indigenous flora, the advocacy of public scientific institutions, the education of the population and the greatness of the nation. The alliance between science and politics helped to establish a track record in São Paulo, which was instrumental for the consolidation of the project that eventually created new sites and institutions where botany played a major role. The study indicates that Hoehne and Seção de Botânica had their stories closed interconnected and were essential in the institutionalization of botany in São Paulo.
