Abstract in Portuguese
A obra The Principles of Psychology (1890) de William James (1842-1910) é central para a elaboracao desta pesquisa.

Abstract in English
This thesis examines the constitution of the concept of memory in the second half of the 19th century based on historical research on the formulation and consolidation of the notion of memory in light of experimental Psychology and reflecting on the effective theories at that time. The Principle of Psychology (1890), by William James (1842-1910), is central to this research. James' work presents a synthesis of Psychology's general themes, including the concept of memory, which is the object analyzed here. The scope of the research is to examine a supposed separation between experimental Psychology (the foundation of Neuroscience is part of this path) and a branch of more theoretical Psychology, and the development of studies that focused on explaining and circumscribing the concept of memory and the phenomena involved in this process to the neuronal theory proposed in the last two decades of the 19th century
