Além da forte associação de aromas com a memória emocional individual, o olfato pode proporcionar o desencadeamento de memórias coletivas, induzindo recordações que nos tornam conscientes da nossa própria identidade particular e cultural. Apesar do aumento do número de pesquisas relacionadas à evocação de memórias emocionais pelo olfato, ainda não existiam estudos mapeando e analisando esse fenômeno em uma população e caracterizando essas memórias coletivas por meio de relatos respondidos em um instrumento de pesquisa. Os objetivos deste estudo foram: 1)desenvolver um questionário a fim de identificar odores relacionados às memórias emocionais autobiográficas e suas descrições semânticas e, 2) coletar dados em uma amostra populacional brasileira. Um questionário qualitativo foi desenvolvido (Estudo 1) e aplicado em todo o território brasileiro em uma plataforma online (Estudo 2). A amostra final (N=1144) foi coletada proporcionalmente de acordo com a densidade populacional de cada uma das cinco regiões brasileiras. As cinco categorias principais de odores mencionados foram: Alimentos, Natureza, Perfumes, Bebidas e Plantas

In addition to the strong association of aromas with individual emotional memory, the sense of smell can provide the triggering of collective memories by inducing recordings that make us aware of our own particular cultural identity. Despite the increase in the number of studies related to the evocation of emotional memories by smell, there are still no studies mapping and analyzing this phenomenon in a population and characterizing these collective memories through reports answered in a research instrument. The objectives of this study were: 1) to construct a questionnaire in order to identify smells and its semantical descriptions related to autobiographical and emotional memories, and 2) to collect data in a Brazilian population sample. A qualitative questionnaire was developed (Study 1) and applied throughout the Brazilian territory on an online platform (Study 2). The sample (N= 1144) was collected proportionally according to population density for each of the five Brazilian regions. The five main smell categories mentioned were: Food, Nature, Perfume, Drink and Plant
