The experiences and meanings of working for visually disabled people - A study from the perspective of the Psychology of Working Theory (PWT)

Abstract in English
This research aimed to know and understand the experiences and meanings of working for people with visual impairment (PWVI). Based on the epistemological basis of social constructionism, considering the centrality of work in a person's life and from the perspective of the Psychology of Working Theory (PWT), the qualitative study heard, through semistructured interviews, four people with more than five years in the labor market about their experiences of working. We sought to find out how these people started in the world of work, how they narrate their experiences, and what professional perspectives they present, based on a content analysis. The narratives made it possible to identify the social, educational, and relational factors of the insertion into work and the meanings of working. Through the model proposed by PWT, the study contributed to understanding the experiences of working and identifying the compatibility of the work done by PWVI with the concept of decent work. The results pointed out that accessibility difficulties, low offer of job opportunities, precarious supply of assistive technology resources, attitudinal and personnel management issues hinder the access to decent work, indicating that not all participants have a decent job. It is proposed that other studies be carried out to broaden the discussions. For this, it is suggested that people with other disabilities be incorporated and that the studies be extended to regions/cities beyond the large urban centers. The contributions of this study may help in proposing public and educational policies and contribute to researchers and professional and career counselors to reflect, in their working practices, on the relational and contextual issues that involve the choice and professional development and work of PWD
