Esta pesquisa se insere no âmbito das ações voltadas à permanência estudantil que partem do campo artístico-cultural. Utiliza, como ponto de partida para seu desenvolvimento, o eixo cultura presente no Programa Nacional de Assistência Estudantil (PNAES). O trabalho propõe estabelecer preliminarmente a relação entre permanência estudantil e arte/cultura e, verificar quais sentidos podem permear as ações desta natureza nas Instituições Federais de Ensino Superior (IFES). Recorre à bibliografia sobre o desenvolvimento das preocupações acerca da cultura ao longo da história e sobre as concepções do termo a partir de diferentes visões, além de contextualizar sobre acesso e assistência/permanência estudantil no Brasil. Utiliza a pesquisa em fontes documentais ao se lançar na leitura interpretativa de editais de fomento à arte e cultura e de uma coletânea de contos em uma universidade federal de São Paulo. Os conceitos de capital cultural e habitus de Pierre Bourdieu, experiência estética e estética social trabalhados por Arnold Berleant compõem algumas das reflexões realizadas. Como achados da pesquisa temos que a intersecção de arte/cultura e permanência estudantil é tema pouco explorado na literatura; não há um conceito de cultura unificado e amplamente utilizado na contemporaneidade; a visão antropológica de cultura auxilia na promoção da inclusão de estudantes de variados contextos por meio da valorização da diversidade; concepções distintas de cultura podem articular noções hierárquicas e de exclusão e o mesmo ocorre no campo das artes; a estética, a experiência estética e a estética social são importantes vias para construção da alteridade por meio da experiência do corpo em sua dimensão sensível, o que mostra ser bastante necessário no recorte da permanência estudantil e da universidade federal brasileira

This research falls within the scope of the actions aimed at student permanence in the artistic-cultural field. It uses, as a starting point for its development, the "culture" axis present in the National Program of Student Assistance (PNAES). It proposes to preliminarily establish the relationship between "student permanence" and "art/culture" and, to verify which meanings may permeate the actions of this nature in the Federal Institutions of Higher Education (IFES). It resorts to bibliography about the development of "concerns about culture" throughout History and about the conceptions of the term from different visions, in addition to contextualizing access and student assistance/permanence in Brazil. It uses the research in documental sources when diving into the interpretative reading of edicts of fomentation to art and culture and of a short story collection in a federal university from São Paulo. The concepts of "cultural capital" and "habitus" by Pierre Bourdieu, "aesthetic experience" and "social aesthetics" by Arnold Berleant are linked with the reflections made in this research. We can conclude from this study that the intersection of art/culture and student permanence is a theme little explored in the literature; there is no unified and widely used concept of culture in present days; the anthropological view of culture helps in promoting the inclusion of students from different backgrounds by valuing diversity; different conceptions of culture may articulate hierarchical and exclusion notions, and the same occurs in the field of arts; aesthetics, aesthetic experience, and social aesthetics are important ways to build alterity through the experience of the body in its sensible dimension, which shows to be quite necessary in the context of student permanence and the Brazilian federal university
