Thought, perception, stress and distress in the Rorschach of public university students with suicidal ideation

Suicide Rorschach test
Abstract in English
Suicide is the act of causing one's own death intentionally and according to the World Health Organization should be taken as a priority in public health. The objective of this study was to assess aspects of thinking, perception, stress and distress through the Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS) of students at risk of suicide, in order to understand the psychological functioning and difficulties of these students, and the Self Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20) and the Columbia Suicide Risk Assessment Scale (C-SSRS). Thirty-six students from a public university were evaluated. Thirty-one students showed signs of psycho-emotional disturbance (SRQ-20³7), twenty-two students reported they wish to be dead, or they had suicidal thoughts in the last six months; eight students have had at least one suicide attempt (C-SSRS); fifteen students reported non-suicidal self-injurious behavior (NSSIB). In the R-PAS, students with ideation showed to be more defended in the task, showed more disorganized thoughts and increased negative affects related to experiences of situational stress, helplessness, despair, trauma, concerns about their own body, and feeling of exposure and vulnerability. There were indications of greater complexity of experiences of students with NSSIB, with possible difficulty in managing feelings, as well as greater identification with aggression. Students with a history of attempted suicide showed greater disorganization of thought and increased concerns about their bodies. Qualitative analyzes of students protocols with ideation were also done, and problems related to perception and thinking of most students and the distressing feelings they experienced were verified, causing them to overflow and betake coping mechanisms that were not at the service of an instinct to stay alive. We conclude that therapeutic support is a key factor between life and death for some of these students, and for reducing the burden of suffering. Sharing these distressing feelings with another person, creating an effective link with a therapist, and feeling understood and sheltered by someone could have a positive and therapeutic effect. It seems to be essential to create spaces to care for students, and this could be an essential point in reducing anguish and, consequently, in preventing suicides
