Compreender os processos psíquicos do envelhecimento torna-se uma urgência à medida em que a população brasileira vem atingindo uma alta expectativa de vida. Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo investigar as condições relacionadas à esperança durante o envelhecimento. Foram utilizados como procedimentos uma entrevista semiestruturada e a aplicação de dois instrumentos: uma Narrativa Interativa e a Escala de Esperança de Herth. Seus resultados foram discutidos à luz da teoria de D.W.Winnicott. Os procedimentos foram realizados com quatro entrevistados, sendo um homem e três mulheres, com idades que variaram entre 67 e 82 anos. Os resultados encontrados apontam a esperança como um importante fator associado à saúde e foram formuladas três categorias de análise: 1) O encontro com o propósito e o sentido de existência: a esperança e o ato reparador; 2) Sentir-se vivo: a esperança e a capacidade para morrer e 3) Relacionamentos e Transgeracionalidade: a esperança e o ambiente. Concluiu-se que o desenvolvimento emocional é um processo contínuo, demandando diversas transformações entre as fases do viver. A esperança demonstrou-se como sustentação para estas vicissitudes e uma forma de atravessar o envelhecer e conquistar capacidades referentes ao amadurecimento que se segue até o fim da vida

Understanding the psychic processes of aging becomes an emergency as the Brazilian population has reached a high life expectancy. This research aims to investigate the conditions related to hope during aging. A semi-structured interview and the application of two instruments were used as procedures: an Interactive Narrative and the Herth Hope Scale. His results were discussed in light of D.W.Winnicotts theory. The procedures were performed with four interviewees, one male and three female, with ages ranging from 67 to 82 years. The results found point to hope as an important factor associated with health and three categories of analysis were formulated: 1) The encounter with the purpose and sense of existence: hope and the act of reparation; 2) Feeling alive: hope and the ability to die and 3) Relationships and Transgenerationality: hope and the environment. It was concluded that emotional development is a continuous process, demanding several transformations between the phases of living. Hope has been shown to sustain these vicissitudes and a way of crossing the age and gaining capacities regarding the maturation that follows until the end of life
