Abstract in English
Siblingship is a key factor in children's social and emotional development. The accumulated knowledge about these relationships is derived from investigations with families of non-twin siblings. However, given its unique nature, the twin relationship seems to differ in many ways from non-twin siblings. In addition, studies show an increase in the birth rate of twins in Brazil and worldwide. Twin studies are an interesting field of scientific investigation of kinship selection theory, since monozygotic pairs share 100% of genetic load while pairs of dizygotic twins share 50%. Therefore, in order to fill the gap of psychological scientific studies, regarding the nature of twin relationships in childhood, the present study investigated mother's reports on siblings' relationship as a function of genetic relationship, type of sibling, sexual composition and age. To this end, 884 mothers of twins and 134 mothers of non-twins aged 1 to 12 years answered a Relationship Questionnaire, in which the quality of the relationship between siblings is assessed based on five dimensions: proximity, dependence, rivalry, conflict and dominance. Considering the dependence of data at the intrapair level, the analyzes were performed using the mixed ANOVA of repeated measures. Thus, as a result, MZ twins were described as closer and more dependent, both in relation to the DZ twins and non-twin siblings. In addition, when considering the age variable, MZ pairs, from 1 to 3 years old, were considered significantly closer and more conflictive than the DZ. Regarding sexual composition, pairs of male twins were perceived as more conflictive in three situations: a) when compared to pairs of twins of the opposite sex, regardless of zygosity; b) in MZ pairs, from 7 to 9 years old, when compared to female pairs; c) in DZ pairs, from 10 to 12 years old, when compared to pairs of the opposite sex. Therefore, it is expected that the results presented in this study will contribute to a better understanding of the twin relationship, emphasizing the need to consider the specific nature of this relationship in studies on sibling relationships
