Self-imposed time-out
Abstract in English
Self-imposed Time-out (TO) is an expression that refers to occasions in which experimental subjects emit responses that temporarily suspend the contingency of positive reinforcement and change the condition of visual stimulation associated with the reinforcement. This behavior receives two distinct interpretations: 1) escape of the positive reinforcement schedule, or 2) positive reinforcement by ambient lighting. The aim of this work was to verify whether rats subjected to different FR values, in positive reinforcement schedules in the first bar, press a second bar due to: 1) suspension of the positive reinforcement schedule and change of the stimulus associated to it (TO); 2) modification only of the ambient lighting (MA) and 3) no programmed consequences (CO). Eighteen Wistar rats were divided into three groups. In a box with two bars, one of them provided reinforcement stimuli (water) in an FR schedule, with increasing values throughout the sessions: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 40. Pressuring the alternative bar would produce TO, MA or CO, depending on the study group. A second pressure on this bar would restore the original conditions. The results showed several differences between the TO animals and the others: higher response frequency (short duration) to the second bar; increasing frequency of this response as a function of the increase in RF; greater probability of issuing this response after post reinforcement; few responses on the bar associated with the FR during the TO period. The amount of reinforcement delivered throughout the study that was approximately the same in all three groups. We argue that the results strengthen the escape hypothesis, which theoretically has favorable implications for current analyzes that suggest that there are aversive properties in positive reinforcement contingencies
