Abstract in English
The COVID-19 pandemic is a biological disaster with priceless consequences in the field of mental health. In Brazil, confirmed deaths exceed 600,000 as of October 2021. It is estimated that for each death by COVID-19, six to ten people suffer from the shock of grief. Death is widespread and the collective mourning of the pandemic is silenced because of the impediment from carrying out farewells and funeral rituals, in compliance with the norms of social distancing. Forbidding the ritual highlights the possibility of the outbreak complications due to grieving. Given the great negative consequences that grief causes for mourners mental health, especially at this time of the pandemic when several losses can occur simultaneously - job losses, bankruptcy, consequences triggered by social distancing, life projects that needed to be postponed or were prevented, among others - in addition to specific deaths, it was sought, with this research, to describe and understand the influx of these deaths to the bereaved who lost their parents by COVID-19. The theoretical framework that guided the essay came from Analytical Psychology, which comprises mourning through the constellation of archetypal images of death as possibilities for personality transformation in the individuation process. The theoretical foundation is also based on the authors perspective with extensive research experience on the phenomenon of grief. The study is qualitative in nature, as this approach offers possibilities for the exploration of senses and meanings. Data collection was performed through open interviews with five bereaved Brazilian adults who had lost at least one of their parents to COVID-19. The method used for the collection, treatment and analysis of data is the Symbolic Processing - Archetypal, which helped in understanding the symbols resulting from the mourning process. In the participants' reports, several risk factors were identified for the complicated grief development as evident in the examples, lack of network of support resulting from social isolation, poor and inadequate communication with the medical staff, prohibiting of hospital visits and impediment to the performance of farewells and funeral rites. Their experiences show the singularities of mourning for loss of loved ones by COVID-19. The research aims to contribute to the support and therapeutics for the mourners affected by the deaths from the pandemic, whether in the public or private psychosocial care sector. As final consideration of this master thesis, studies on grief connected with this theme are suggested, such as: grief of health professionals amidst the pandemic, anguish of patients who were hospitalized in the COVID ICU, unauthorized bereavement and male bereavement
