Abstract in English
The present research, guided by an existential phenemenology psychology orientation, had as the guiding question how its possible to understand the athletes experiences in face of his own performance?, and for the purpose to show comprehensive possibilities for this question. We sought to expose the development of M. Heideggers existential phenomenology thinking and method, in distance from the so-called natural sciences, and to present reflections about concepts of the sport psychology. To accomplish this task, we used as a resource a narrative about the career of a swimming athlete. The aspects addressed in relation to performance experiences were: the place ocuppied by oponents, in analogy with the distance and proximity aspects of love relationships, contact with one´s body as a corporality, the role of choices, identity as an athlete, the meanings given to sports results, the affective mood of the competitive nervous regarding performance, among others. We conclude that the existential phenomenology can contribute by understanding the athlete as the subject of the experience (the one to whom things happen), affirming the importance of the athletes sporting, life and career contexts with regard to sports performance and developing themes bordering on positivist sport psychology, opening space and giving legitimacy to the knowledge of yourself that comes from the athlete
