Abstract in English
Feelings and emotions, present in all aspects of human life, are constantly being the focus of studies aimed at understanding the multiple interactions between people. This interest in feelings and emotions have increasingly been seen in the social scene, being the focus of trainings, protocols and instruments directed at the development of socio-emotional skills. This research aims to provide a more adequate understanding of this increased interest through a theoretical study of relevant documents focusing in defining and understanding what is being called as Emotional Intelligence and socio-emotional skills. Particularly, it aims at understanding how the concept of Emotional Intelligence, especially in its conceptualization by Goleman, is contributing (or not) to present Emotional Intelligence as a form of control and domination of emotions, establishing itself as a technology that intend to develop specific skills so that people can enter in contact with their emotions through fixed and pre-formatted categories. In this study, we mainly utilized the works of the first generation of the School of Frankfurt, notably Theodor W. Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Walter Benjamin e Herbert Marcuse. For the readings on Emotional Intelligence and socio-emotional skills, we have used 3 dialectic pairs that have been grounded by the Critical Theory: Formation and Pseudoformation, Authentic experience and Inauthentic experience, Openness to Reflexive Thinking and Closure of Thinking in Stereotypes. The main work used to understand the concept of Emotional Intelligence is Emotional Intelligence: the groundbreaking book that redefines what it means to be smart (Goleman), which is book with broad outreach, and it presents itself as the basis to define other documents utilized in this research. Another relevant document to understand the increased interest in social skill trainings is the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development): skills for social progress: the power of social and emotional skills. The result of this study has shown how both documents are promoting practices that strengthen the heteronomy of subjects, especially with Golemans Emotional Intelligence concept establishing itself as a technology to control emotions, as it subordinates emotions to a technological rationality that is present in a society that favors productivity and performance in activities that are considered socially useful, which ultimately contributes to adjust people to the reality in a non-critical way
