Abstract in English
This present study aims at evaluating the reading comprehension of students from the 7th, 8th and 9th Grades of Elementary School II, from schools in the Public and Private schools, through the analysis of the retelling produced by these students, after the individual reading of a tale from the national literature. Eighty-six students participated in this study, but there were only 55 files with the audios of the retellings recorded for analysis. Each retelling was evaluated based on the figure-ground principle, based on the transitivity theory, making it possible to investigate the types of clauses taken out by the students, with Figure being the clauses that represent the central parts of the text; Background 1, the clauses related to the ideas present in the figure clauses, but with more complex morphosyntactic structures; and, finally, Background 2, the more peripheral clauses, more distant from the figure clauses, with more subjective information and more complex structures. This analysis allowed us to obtain very precise results regarding the retaking of clauses, confirming the hypothesis that the figures would be predominant in the retellings. It also made it possible for us to realize that schooling influences the number of figures, background 1 and background 2 taken out by students in their retellings
