The professional experience of the author, a school teacher for over three decade, has shown that welltaught lessons (with or without technology) is not always result in students meaningful learning. This ascertainment encouraged the author to search alternatives to improve teachers' work and therefore, to increase student achievement in mathematics. The various studies undertaken on the different subjects of masters degree in Math Education from the University of São Paulo lead the author to develop a work based on the assumptions of Mathematical modeling. This strategy intends to combine theory with practice to provide broad conditions for students understand real-world problems. The research was applied with a group of students in the first grade of high school in a private educational institution, located in the city of Osasco, in the greater São Paulo. This group of students proposed a problem situation about global warming. Due to this situation, the author sought to apply theory related to modeling work, associated with the practice. Statistical data and graphs researched by students were analyzed with teacher by calculations on matrices and with the aid of the software Microsoft Excel. The challenge for participants was to obtain a law of formation by curve fitting that would best represent the situation. In other words, the focus of the work related to study of functions, mainly in tables analysis, graphs and a law of formation. Everyone knows by excel tool was obtained a satisfactory modeling, that is, a function compatible with data. The positive interaction of students with the proposed challenges and tthe discovery of new knowledge objects needed for global understanding was verified during the modeling process. The several meetings and reflections with students were indispensable for improve their analytical and reflective thinking. At the end, after problem solved and obtaining the better law of function of the proposal situation reflections the immense potential scope in working with mathematical modelling, mainly as mathematics can not only help to understand the societys problems, it can also help in proposing alternative solutions.
