Markov chains applied to definite groundwater flow models lithological layers

Abstract in English
A numerical groundwater flow model acquires its recognition as an important working device, or just an "instrument of thinking", by the same measure which it shows some ability to deal with the large number of complementary variables interacting as parts of a complex problem, such as all related elements of a water management plan dealing with an environmental liability eventually present at a given portion of an aquifer. This research seeks to discuss the premises of the mathematical and geological framework developed by the Markov Chains' approach for a modflow simulation, as a supposed better stochastic interpolation approach in filling the model block-diagram when in comparison with the traditional interpolation techniques, as the manually made geological inferences for transections or related ones, based on the deterministic spatial variance. For a database of a brownfield at the city of Guarulhos, São Paulo state, Brazil, a region formed by sedimentary deposits of recognized high rates of heterogeneity and depositional anisotropy variations, the flow model simulates the retention of particles by a hydraulic containment barrier in the deterministic and stochastic-markovian contexts. Through the understanding and practical application of the Tprogs algorithm, whose operation is based on a dual analysis of both geostatistics and sedimentology principles, it is believed that reasonable better results have been achieved in the design of the block-diagrams required by the numerical simulation. Under the same operating premises of a unique numerical model, varying exclusively the three-dimensional distribution of these lithologies on the deterministic (MBDD) and stochastic (MBDE) approaches, a marked difference of the vertical component of those particle tracks was observed. Given the greater tendency or stronger horizontal support of particles in the stochastic-markovian model, this was the better, if not the unique, reliable approach in dimensioning the needed hydraulic containment system for a somewhat demanding calibration context. Among 20 equiprobable realizations MBDE, increasing increments of pumping flows rates allowed the computation of increasing probabilities of efficiency in capturing all the particles. The final result is a probability curve of 56% (72 m3 /day), 69% (78 m3/day), 94% (84 m3 /day), and 100% of the particles captured by a minimum, more effective hydraulic barrier total flow of 96 m3/day
