This work was carried out in two parts. In the first one ("Experiments using selected materials") 20 samples of "granitoid" and quartzitc rocks were submitted to laboratorial studies, including petrographic analysis determination of quartz crystallinity index by x-ray diffraction, and attainment of quartz "disorder coefficient" by infrared spectroscopy. Tests of potential alkali reactivity were performed by chemical and mortar bar methods. The last one included the traditional method at 38°C and 60°C and also an accelerated method; measurements were made during 24 months and 28 days, respectively. Several mineralogical and petrographic parameters, selected from the above studies, were related to potential alkali-aggregate reactivity. The studies made it clear that the amount of microcrystalline quartz (<0,15 mm) is by far the most efficient parameter. The grain size of the rock matrix, the quartz crystal sizes (>= 0,15 mm) and the undulatory extinction angle in quartz, if associated with the amount of this mineral, can be useful in the prediction of the alkali-reactivity of aggregates. The last three essentially textural parameters may constitute, at least in part, rock deformation indicators. As judged from the results, the accelerated method is to be considered the most suitable for the evaluation of performances of tectonically deformated "granitoid" rock. This method was developed by the National Building Research Institute - NBRI and discussed by OBERHOLSTER & DAVIES (1986). The data obtained in the first phase of the present work were then applied to the case of the Pedro Beicht Dam. It was concluded that microgranular quartz concentrations present in the deformed and partially recrystallized "granitoid" of aggregates are the main agent answerable for the observed alkali-aggregate reactions. The cement put to use in concrete, 60 to 65 years ago, was then very rich in alkalis (about 1.3-1.6%). Observations of features in the central part of the dam pointed out: a higher cement consumption; higher content of alkali per m3 of concrete; higher incidence of aureoles of alkali-aggregate reaction and also, larger abundance of concrete fissures. Some relationship between fissuration and alkali-aggregate reaction is presumed. The neoformation material found in reaction aureoles is an alkaline gel which sometimes exhibit low crystallinity or, locally, well developed foliar crystalline phases. In its composition, Si, Ca and K are predominant, but some Al may also appear.
