Abstract in English
This thesis describes geophysical techniques applied to the mapping and monitoring of ground water pollution and contamination, specifically for cases involving sanitary landfills, areas of vinasse infiltration, salt water intrusion into coastal aquifers, and areas with problems of infiltration and leakage of industrial products and residues. For coastal regions, investigative norms have been established that may be applied to both small and medium urban centers in order to control and prevent marine intrusion into coastal aquifers by applying geophysical methods only. Similarly, a routine for the application of geophysical techniques of mapping and monitoring industrial areas with pollution and contamination problems has also been developed. The areas studied are distributed throughout the State of São Paulo and thus represent diverse situations within a broad geographic and geologic context. Sanitary landfills were studies in the Municipalities of Taubaté, São José dos Campos and Novo Horizonte, and areas of vinasse infiltration in Novo Horizonte and Rio Preto. The coastal region focussed upon in this study is located between Bertioga and São Sebastião, and the polluted industrial area in São José dos Campos. Also included in this thesis is a comparative study of the two methodologies, conventional resistivity and electromagnetic inductive techniques, considered the most appropriate for the study of ground water pollution, with emphasis on the advantages and disadvantages of each in order to optimize their joint application.
