Abstract in English
The presence of high indoor concentration of 222Rn and daughters has been object of various studies and discussion about the actual health problem that these radioelements may cause. The aim of this work is to collaborate with the dosimetry of 222Rn and daughters, developing a low cost and easy to use methodology to determine the indoor alpha emission concentration. This methodology is based on passive detection with CR39 and LR115 solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD). This work considered the plate-out effect, a characteristic of radon daughters that renders their deposition on walls, soil, ceiling, furniture and materials in general, causing a reduction in activity of radon daughters in the air surrounding these surfaces. LR115 plastics, whose response to self plate-out effects is negligible, proved to be the best form to carry out this detection, when low cost and easyness of use are considered. Its calibration was done in ambients where CR39 measurements of concentration were available, with a method that also considers the plate-out effect. A study of the characteristics of LR115 detector was performed and the etching conditions that turn maximum its response were found. Various criteria for counting the tracks were tested, to choose the one that allows the easiest track identification and a good efficiency, with less subjectivity. The results showed consistency with others found in literature. A relative calibration between the two detectors was done by simultaneous indoor exposures in controlled environments and in dwellings, where the environmental factors are more important. The results obtained in these two conditions showed a significant difference between the calibration factors (ratio between the track density and the alpha emission concentration) obtained: (0,69 ± 0,04) cm and (0,43 ± 0,03) cm respectively. It was also noticed an increase of LR115 response with the track density for 241Am exposures. These outcomes point out to a supralinear behavior of the detector response in high track density situations or to other factors inherent to all detection and calibration system. The calibration factor obtained for dwelling exposure is more appropriated to use in monitoring of222Rn and daughters when the plate-out effects are considered. An application in some residences was made and the alpha emission concentration varied between (21 ± 7) and (228 ± 21) Bq/m3.
