Abstract in English
This dissertation seeks to explore the understanding of the Karate phenomenon, as well as the universe of this sport and martial modality originating from Asian body culture, based on the experience of karateka. The universe of Karate is vast with meanings that are manifested in various fields in society. We perceive a complex field full of elements such as feelings, rituals, behaviors and ways of interpreting, understanding, interacting and transforming the environment through a practice, which go beyond its place of dissemination, its school or Dojo (training room). The objective of the research was to investigate the main elements that characterize the universe of Karate in the scope of martial arts from the perception of masters and experienced students. The specific objectives were: to describe the field of Karate, according to the perception and understanding of masters and students of this modality; explore the motivations and interpretations regarding the rituals, traditions, behaviors and meanings of this practice. The research was carried out through bibliographic review, theoretical study and interviews with experienced Karate practitioners. The work considered as an important reference for this theme the theoretical contribution of the field of phenomenology. The testimonies of interviewed teachers and practitioners brought rich contributions to the study, based on elements highlighted in the interviewees' narratives. Regarding the practice periods, it was possible to identify three important moments in the practice of Karate: before, during and after training. The meanings attributed to the practice highlighted in this investigation are associated with dogi, dojo, mottos, rituals, masterdisciple relationship, the figure of the karateka and issues related to the concepts of traditional Karate and sports Karate. The discourse that Karate is a martial or sports practice that extrapolates its influence beyond the limits of the Dojo is considered preponderant, as the practitioners reported experiences that go beyond the moments of practice, associated with the notion of overcoming, self-realization and self knowledge. In this context, it is understood that, in the middle of the teaching-learning processes developed during the practice of Karate, karateka interacts and learns with the other, with the world and with himself
