O objetivo desta pesquisa foi descrever os determinantes de natureza pessoal, comportamental que influenciaram, o comportamento de manutenção da adesão dos participantes (n=41 ; idade média de 69,4 anos) do Programa Autonomia para a Atividade Física (PAAF) da Escola de Educação Física e Esporte da USP. Após o término do programa, que teve a duração de 12 meses, os sujeitos que aderiram a ele até o final, responderam a um questionário com 39 questões. Os determinantes pessoais e comportamentais indicaram que: a maior parte era do sexo feminino (72,7%); houve predomínio de pessoas casadas (58,5%); 75,6% eram aposentadas; o grau de instrução e status sócio econômico apresentou alta variabilidade; a avaliação da saúde percebida foi positiva; quase metade dos sujeitos nunca tinha participado de programas supervisionados de AF anteriormente ao PAAF; 85,4% nunca fumaram. A análise dos determinantes ambientais revelou que: 50% dos sujeitos gastavam 40 minutos ou mais para chegarem ao programa; a maioria recebia incentivos da família e dos amigos para frequentarem o PAAF. Concluiu-se que os sujeitos deste estudo apresentam padrões de comportamentos para as atividades físicas diferente do perfil de pessoas mais jovens e que consideraram fundamental para manter sua participação a relação estabelecida com os professores e com o grupo de alunos, as características educacionais do PAAF e ganhos percebidos de saúde

The goal this research was to describe the determinants of personal, behavioral and environmental nature that influenced the maintenance behavior of the adherence of the participants (n=41; average age of 69.4 years) of the Physical Activity Program (PAAP) of the Scholl of Physical Education and Sports of the University of São Paulo (USP). After the end of the program, that lasted 12 months, the subjects that adhered to it until the end, answered a questionaire of 39 questions. The personal and behavioral determinants indicated that: the larger participation was from females (72.7%); a predominance of married persons (58.5%); 75.6% were retired; the degree of education and social economic status showed high variability; the health evaluation perceived was positive; almost half of the subjects had never participated of physical activity supervised programs before the PAAP; 85.4% had never smoked. The analysis of the environmental determinants revealed that: 50% of the subjects spent 40 minutes or more to reach the program; mosto of them family and friends to attend the PAAP. It was concluded that the subjects of this study presented a pattern of behavior for physical activity diferente of the profile younger persons and they considered fundamental to maintain their participation the relationship established with the teachers and the group of students, the educational characteristics of the PAAP and the gains in health perceived
