Effects of a supervised physical education program on subjective states of the elderly

Subjective states
Abstract in English
Subjective experiences lived in the physical activity field (PA) are important factors to the adhesion and maintenance of PA practice, essential for more dynamic lifestyle and well-being which the old age is subjected to. This is the reason, which guided this study to investigate the effects of a supervised program of physical education related to the subjective States of the elderly. Twenty-six subjects (x=64.19 ± 4.02 years) gave their own permission to participate. They were submitted for 12 months to the Autonomy Program for Physical Activity (PAAF 2002). The data collection was gathered in the beginning, after 6 and 12 months of intervention (evaluation 1,2, 3 respectively) through the scales such as the Likert one, (1) the Subjective Exercise Experiences Scale (McAULEY & COURNEYA, 1994) to evaluate the subjective States of Positive Well-Being, Psychological Distress and Fatigue and, (2) the Physical Self- Efficacy Scale (RYCKMAN et al., 1982), to evaluate the Perceived Physical Ability (PPA), the Physical Self-Presentation Confidence (PSPC) and the Physical Self-Efficacy (PSE). The analyses of internai consistency of measurement, in general, have indicated a satisfactory alpha of Cronbach. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and through Friedman and Wilcoxon tests. Meaningful differences were observed: a) Fatigue (x2 [N=26, 2]= 13,76; p= 0,001) between evaluations 1-3 e 2-3; b) PPA (x2 [N=25, 2]= 12,86; p= 0,001) between evaluations 1-2 e 1-3; c) PSE (x2 [N=26, 2]= 10,50; p= 0,005) between evaluation 1-2 e 1-3. We have come to the conclusion that the 12 months intervention had a partial effect on the subjective States of the subjects due to the characteristics of the sample, design of study, quality of the instrument and program configurations
