Abstract in English
Because of the obvious growth of the elderly population in the world, it became a concem for many areas to identify the conditions that allow aging with quality. One of the elements that determine a healthy and active life expectancy is the independence to perform daily life activities. Research shows that 25% of the elderly yoldwide depend on others to perform their daily tasks, and the vast majority, although independent, show somo kind of difficulty in performing puch tasks. The objective of this research was to check the effects of a physical education program on the qualitative and quantitative components of daily life activities of the elderly. In the study there were 30 subjects, with average age of 66,97, members of the Physical Activity Autonomy Program (PAAF) in School of Physical Education and Sports of São Paulo University. In order to check the quantitative charges of performance in daily life activities, the subjects performed, before and after 12 months of the program, seven tests: walk 800 metres, limb stairs, climb laddres, get up from the floor, sit down and stand up from a chair and move around the house, manual skills and put on socks. To check the qualitative changes, the perception of the main changes was reported, in 12 months, about the daily life activities mentioned above. It was concluded that the PAAF was able to promote more qualitative than quantitative changes. While two out of seven daily activities investigated had an increase in the speed of the performance (sit down and stand up from a chair and move around the house and put on socks), for most of the subjects, all had qualitative influence from the program, among the most influenced: movement technique improvement, increase in the speed of task performance and adoption of security measures to perform the activities
