Abstract in English
Taxonomic studies of the genus Rochinia A. Milne-Edwards, 1875, elaborated by previous authors, culminated in the reestablishment of Sphenocarcinus A. Milne-Edwards, 1878 (type S. corrosus A. Milne Edwards, 1878) and Oxypleurodon Miers, 1885 (species type O. Stimpsoni Miers, 1885) both until then included in the synonymy of Rochinia and in the description of Nasutocarcinus Tavares, 1991 (species type N. difficilis Guinot & Richer de Forges, 1985). However, Rochinia remained an artificial taxon. Recently, based on the morphology of the cephalothorax and thoracic and abdominal appendages, the definition of Rochinia was better elaborated and the genera Scyramathia A. Milne-Edwards, 1880 (type S. umbonata species) and Anamathia Smith, 1885 (type A. rissoana species) Roux, 1828) were removed from their synonymy and the genus Mynirhyncha Tavares & Santana 2018 was created (species type M. crassa Tavares & Santana 2018). Rochinia, still artificial, requires additional studies with a view to its better definition. In the present project, the morphology of the ossicles of the gastric stomach (gastric mill) was used to better define Rochinia and deepen its morphological differentiation with Scyramathia and Minyorhyncha. Stomachs of at least two adult individuals of each species were studied, the stomachs were removed, conditioned, labeled and fixed in 10% formalin for 24 hours. Subsequently, they were immersed in a 10% Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) solution at 100 ºC for 60 minutes for tissue maceration. Skeletons were stained for 15 minutes with Alizarin-red added to a heated KOH solution for better visualization of the ossicles. Dissections were performed under a stereoscopic microscope and illustrations were performed using a clear camera. The present study revealed that the distinction between Minyorhyncha, Scyramathia and Rochinia is supported by the morphology of the ossicles that make up the gastric stomach. Scyramathia differs from Rochinia in the eight-ossicle morphology, Minyorhyncha crassa differs from Rochinia gracilipes and Scyramathia umbonata in the nine-ossicle morphology of the gastric stomach. Studies with the ossicles of the gastric skeleton prove to be a great way to obtain supportive information for morphological studies.
