Abstract in English
Through the decades of 1930-1940, the artist Anita Malfatti produced thirty-five oil portraits of her friends, family and students. Therefore, this research sought to study this production in three parts. The first part involved looking at the artist's path with the portrait genre, throughout earlier moments of her career, until the 30s. An attempt was made to establish a history that would give a solid basis for understanding the artist's later performance with portrait. In the second one, the research turned to the relationships between the artist and the portrayed ones, in which the three mentioned categories were listed to structure the field of personal and professional relationships where the artist was inserted at the time. In this stage, the main objective was to make a comparative study with the success trajectory of the contemporary painter Candido Portinari with portraiture. Lastly, the third of this work, looks at the insertion of this production in collective and individual exhibitions. Through the analysis of the data, this research tried to demonstrate that Anita Malfatti was aware of the rules of the artistic field of her time, acting within the limits that allowed her to sustain herself from her art and also teaching. Overall, this research sought to present that Anita had a large agency within her own path and, within the limits and possibilities, made choices that could make her art life possible at the time.
