Abstract in English
This study aims to understand the trajectory of industrial immigrant Isai Leirner in the constitution of the cultural field of the city of São Paulo in the mid-twentieth century. Establishing the connexions between Isai Leirner's professional and personal career and the complexity of the cultural, economic and artistic field of a given moment in the Brazilian reality is the motto of this research, aiming to understand ruptures and convergences between public and private. To this end, it seeks to approach its trajectory from some major axes: 1) Isai as a significant case for understanding the importance of Jewish immigration in São Paulo in its contribution to some specific universes, such as the artistic field; 2) In this sense, the founding of the Leirner Prize for Contemporary Art (1956) and the Galeria de Arte das Folhas (1957) are relevant moments to understand Isai Leirner's insertion in the field and the way it articulates the economic world with the cultural one. Finally, 3) seeks to unravel how the family relationships of the Leirners contributed to the rise of individuals who are part of this "clan". Starting from the idea of Gilda de Mello and Souza's "contamination of prestige", special attention is given to the partnership between Isai and the female artist Felicia Leirner, which may be indicative of the articulations between economic and cultural elites and the cleavages of gender in the São Paulo environment at that time.
