Abstract in English
The home paints represent a large part of the revenue of the national chemical industry. Several producers have highlighted the difficulty of acquiring the most used pigment in the sector, Titanium Dioxide (TiO2), both for its high commercial value and for the scarcity of domestic suppliers, depending almost exclusively on imports. In this scenario, the search for innovative products that can replace the pigment and renew the supply chain, combining performance and better cost-benefit, has become increasingly opportune. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the possibility of replacing the pigment by cellulose nanofibers, in order to make the production process of paints more economical and flexible for producers. The study evaluated opaque latex paint in the white color of three different qualities: economy, standard and premium. Through an experimental program, formulations with only TiO2 in its composition were prepared, called conventional mixtures, and, from these, formulations were developed that replaced the pigment in percentage of mass by the nanomaterial, at intervals of 10%, until complete replacement. Tests to evaluate the performance were conducted for the conventional mixtures and for those that had nanofibers in their composition. In the results analysis phase, the paints had their performances analyzed and compared to each other. It was found that some of the economical formulations with nanofibers in their composition started to meet the minimum performance requirements of standard paints, which, in turn, started to meet the requirements of premium paints. Thus, the best concentrations of the new component were determined for paints production.
