Existe a necessidade de as empresas se tornarem mais ágeis e flexíveis com foco em seu próprio negócio. Neste contexto, surge a oportunidade de utilizar como base um modelo americano de sucesso de controle de produtos químicos e gerenciamento de suas operações, que representa um modo de obter vantagens competitivas perante os concorrentes. O principal enfoque do sistema de controle de produtos químicos é buscar no gerenciamento de suas operações, como aquisição, distribuição, controle de consumo e demais processos relacionados aos produtos químicos, oportunidades de redução de custos, comunização de materiais e outros benefícios. Há o controle e otimização de todo o ciclo de vida dos produtos químicos, desde a especificação até o desenvolvimento de fontes de fornecimento e a entrega dos materiais e até o acompanhamento de suas aplicações. Isto pode trazer como benefícios a redução no uso de produtos químicos, aprimoramentos contínuos no processo, melhoria na qualidade, reduções de custo, aumento da segurança, mais eficácia no gerenciamento de informação e na prevenção de poluição. O sistema de controle de produtos químicos e gerenciamento de suas operações, conhecido nas indústrias pelo jargão Gerenciamento Químico, é uma prática de sucesso e uma forma de as empresas sealinharem para o estabelecimento de relacionamento colaborativo e interdependente entre o cliente e fornecedor. Assim, este estudo objetiva apresentar os conceitos do Gerenciamento Químico e a implantação deste sistema em uma indústria automotiva no Brasil

In a moment of high global competition, companies strive to survive in the market seeking alternatives to cut the structural costs and to improve their competitiveness. There is a need for the companies to become more agile and flexible with their main attention concentrated on the core. In this situation, there is the opportunity to use as basis a successful American model of chemical material control and management of its operations, which represent a way to obtain competitive gains in face of the competitors. The major objective of the system of chemical material control is to seek in the management of its operations, such as procurement, distribution utilization control and other procedures, opportunities to reduce costs, work streamlining, chemical material communization and other gains. There are optimization and control of the of the whole cycle time of the chemical material, from the product specification up to the development of supplying sources, from the delivery of the material to the follow-up of their applications. This scheme may bring such gains as lesser usage of chemical products, continuous process, quality improvement, cost reduction, better safeguard, more effectiveness in information management and in pollution prevention. The procedure of chemical material control and management of its operations, known in the industry as Chemical Management, is one of the major actions and a manner for the companies to align themselves for the cooperative andinterdependent relationship of the different areas of activities. Therefore, this dissertation aims at presenting the concepts of Chemical Management and the implementation planning of the system in an automobile industry in Brazil.
