The design of steel structures at room temperature does not need to take creep effects into account. This is due to the little to none effect over steel structures performance under thiscondition. Nevertheless, under fire conditions, creep strains can be severe as the temperature surpasses 30% to 40% of the material melting point. The extent of creep strains is strongly influenced by temperature, stress and time. The available published writings regarding the performance of end restrained or simple supported steel beams, under fire conditions, do not explicitly evaluate creep strains during the heating and cooling phases of steel. In this Masters' Dissertation, the effect of creep deformations on steel elements is investigated through an extensive study on the available creep models, a State of the Art that addresses the last 100 years of research on creep in steel and metals, and a computational modeling of a simple structural steel structure, performed with the aid of the computational tool ANSYS. In the computational modeling, mechanical properties of ASTM A572 Grade 50 steel, given by Eurocode 3 part 1-2 (2005) and Poh (2001), are compared and applied along with a creep model proposed by Zienkiewicz and Cormeau (1974), based on the implicit time-hardening, provided by ANSYS. The finite element model is evaluated for constant and varying heating regimes, considering the standard curve ISO-834 (2014) and the temperature-time curves of natural or compartment fires, according to Li and Guo (2008) and Eurocode 1 part 1-2 (2002). It was concluded that the Eurocode 3 part 1-2 (2005) material model does not reach a true outcome when the temperature-time curve of the natural fire is considered. The creep strains come up to a limit value shortly after the steel reaches the maximum temperature when exposed to a natural or compartment fire, differently of what occurs with the application of the ISO-834 (2014) standard curve, thus making it viable to use steel in fire conditions. Notwithstanding, the opening factor, fire load, section factor and fire insulation impact the behavior of the creep curve, showing that the temperature have more influence in creep than time and stress.
