Abstract in English
This research presents the development, implementation, and testing of a time-domain distance protection algorithm. The proposed methodology is based on the behavior of voltage and current signals over time, through the analysis of the Lissajous figure formed by these signals. The procedure for calculating the fault impedance uses the measured voltage and current samples and the conic section general equation. The algorithm was implemented and tested in six different power systems modeled in software Alternative Transient Program (ATP). The simulations included different fault types varying the phases involved, the fault resistance, the fault inception, and the fault location along the line. The performance of the proposed method was also compared with that of other existing solutions, resulting in a total of 25133 different simulation scenarios, besides three real fault cases recorded in the brazilian electrical system. A sensitivity analysis was carried out to verify the algorithm behavior in situations that affect the distance protection performance. There were simulated factors resulting from the system, such as variation in the line loading and power swings; factors related to the measured signals, such as the presence of noise in the samples, the dynamic behavior of the capacitive voltage transformer, and the effect of current transformer saturation; and factors related to the nature of the fault, such as varying fault resistance and close-in faults. The presented results indicate the methods applicability for transmission lines protection. The proposed solution proved to be robust, fast, accurate, secure, and dependable.
