Abstract in English
This work proposes a bit rate adjustment technique of a MPEG compressed video, in a Video on Demand (VoD) implemented over an ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) network. When this network presents momentary bandwidth restriction, not ideal for theoriginal video transmission. This technique will promote some adjustment to match the available amount of bandwidth. Such adjustment is made by changing quantization matrix coefficients which are generated from MPEG coding. This work presents abackpropagation neural net as the main mechanism for that change. The dropping of bit rate implies on a reduction of quality. Therefore, a subject quality test was draw up and, throughout video acceptance, Quality Index for videos was defined. The neural net simulation was concluded showing convergence for the technique validation proposed and indicating the viability of its use. The Quality Index defined was used as one of the input parameter imposed to the neural net. A Server ofQuality (SoQ) was specified to be integrated to a VoD system with the function of negotiating and renegotiating the connection, and performing the video rate bit adjustment. The SoQ main module makes all these adjustments through a neural net.It was implemented and tested simulating an ATM network. These tests were performed using four standard digital video sequences, which present dynamic scene with different features and intensity. The system presented a good behavior allowing changes in the quantization coefficients and consequently altering the required bandwidth for the video transmission. The system performance evaluation demonstrated that its use would increase up to 200 ms delay for VoD system. The delay iscompatible to the real-time system requirement when we consider adaptive application and stored program distribution on demand.
