Title in English
Reevaluation of stopping sight distances and vertical curve lengths for rural and urban highway design
Keywords in English
Highway geometric design
Stopping sight distance
Abstract in English
Major parameters that affect computation of minimum design values for stopping sight distance and for vertical curve lengths were originally established more than 30 years ago. Since that time, there have been significant changes of some main vehicle features; in addition much research has been done to better evaluate the visual ability and the behavior of drivers under different conditions. Considering actual predominant characteristics and trends of Brazilian passenger cars, as well as the results of some of the above-mentioned research, the purpose of this study is to conduct an analysis and occasional reevaluation of each one of these parameters. At the end, new minimum design values for stopping sight distance and for vertical curve lengths are suggested.
