Abstract in English
This work evaluates the fouling formation and transmembrane flux in crystallization with submerged membrane distillation. Factors such as the agitation intensity and % of solids suspended have a direct impact on the fouling formation and the crystallization temperature influences mainly in the transmembrane flux. Fouling formation and the transmembrane flux were initially studied in a NaCl-H2O system where the variables analyzed were the agitation intensity, % solids and seeds size. The agitation intensity has a direct impact on the process where higher agitation the absence of seeds leads to greatest water recovery. NaCl seeds size of 169±43µm improved process performance obtaining greater water recovery and longer operating time before reaching zero transmembrane flux. A simplified model was developed to predict the results of the tests proposed for experimental unit used capable of predicting both the transmembrane flux and the concentration polarization and temperature polarization coefficients. The process was also studied in the NaCl-H2O-CaSO4.2H2O. In this case the presence of CaSO4.2H2O in solution minimizes the fouling formation leading to longer tests and consequently greater water recovery. The drop in transmembrane flow in the presence of CaSO4.2H2O occurs more gradually than its absence. Finally, studies were carried out with effluent from a reverse electrodialysis unit (EDR). The performance with EDR effluent was verified in different concentrations, concluding that the proposed process has good prospects for industrial application in the recovery of water from EDR effluent.
