Abstract in English
Phase change materials have the function of storing latent heat. Paraffins are commonly used phase change materials. Something not yet studied regarding paraffins is how crystallization influences the conductivity of the material. Given that the relationship betweencrystallization phenomena and the thermal conductivity of PCM has not yet been studied, it has been the object of the present study. For this, five commercial grade paraffins, three produced for use as PCMs and two for general use (as in candles), were characterized by GC/MS and DSC analysis. The thermal conductivity of two crystallized paraffins under different supersaturations was determined experimentally. The rapidly crystallized material had an average conductivity of 0.253 W.m-1.K-1 and the slowly crystallized block 0.215 W.m-1.K-1. A mathematical model was developed to predict the temporal evolution of the MMF layer thickness in cold finger configuration. The model was adjusted to experiments, using detailed experimental determinations of the relevant physical properties, using as the only parameter of the model the paraffin layer conductivity. The adjusted thermal conductivity values for cooling and heating fluid temperatures, respectively, 20 and 60 °C, 20 and 55 °C, 10 and 60 °C, and 10 and 55 °C, respectively, were 0.233, 0.235, 0.313 and 0.305 W.m-1.K-1. The values of coefficients of determination for the calculated thickness as a function of the measured thickness were all above 0.99. Comparing simulations 20-60 and 20-55, there was a 25.56% increase in paraffin layer conductivity and comparing simulations 10-60 and 10-55, there was a 22.95% increase in the conductivity of the layer. As shown by direct experimental determination of conductivity and mathematical determination on cold finger, paraffin thermal conductivity increases with the crystallization rate. The crystalline layers are composed of different solid phases (a fact confirmed by the plasticity of the warm layer), but these phases do not significantly influence the average conductivity of the layer.
