Tendo em vista o potencial da inteligência artificial (IA) de causar ruptura em ecossistemas e contextos organizacionais e a escassez de estudos empíricos que contribuam na compreensão da influência da IA na geração de valor para o negócio, o objetivo desta tese foi investigar, compreender, identificar e apresentar os mecanismos de geração de valor para o negócio com a utilização de tecnologias de IA. Trata-se de uma pesquisa com abordagem qualitativa, fundamentada em um arcabouço teórico construído a partir de uma revisão de literatura, com estudos de caso múltiplos em empresas selecionadas pelo método de amostragem teórica. A amostra foi composta por empresas pertencentes a diferentes segmentos da indústria, que utilizam IA de modo estratégico e possuem alta intensidade de informação nos processos, serviços e produtos. Os resultados da pesquisa indicaram que os mecanismos de orquestração dinâmica de recursos que formam a capacidade da IA são relevantes para que as organizações lidem com os desafios relacionados ao uso da IA em ambientes produtivos e aproveitem no potencial positivo dessas tecnologias na geração de valor para o negócio. Os resultados também evidenciaram que as empresas planejam e executam estratégias digitais de negócio, em um fenômeno que envolve os níveis estratégico, tático e operacional, abrangendo modificações tecnológicas e organizacionais com impactos em infraestrutura e em processos. Assim, esta tese contribui com uma consolidação conceitual e teórica sobre o papel estratégico da inteligência artificial em cenários empresariais e traz diversas perspectivas, de forma teórica e empírica, sobre uso da IA com influência positiva no valor gerado para o negócio.

Considering the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to disrupt ecosystems and organizational contexts and the scarcity of empirical studies that contribute to understanding the influence of AI in generating business value, the objective of this thesis was to investigate, understand, identify, and present the mechanisms for generating business value with the use of AI technologies. This research was performed with a qualitative approach, based on a theoretical framework built from literature review, with multiple case studies in companies selected by the theoretical sampling method. The sample was taken from different industry segments of companies which use AI strategically and have high information intensity in processes, services, and products. The sample for this study was selected from different industry segments, specifically focusing on companies that strategically use AI and exhibit a high level of information intensity across their processes, services, and products. The research results indicated that the dynamic resource orchestration mechanisms that form the AI capability are relevant for organizations to deal with the challenges related to the use of AI in productive environments and to take advantage of the positive potential of these technologies in generating value for business. The results also showed that companies plan and execute digital business strategies, in a phenomenon that involves strategic, tactical, and operational levels, covering technological and organizational changes with impacts on infrastructure and processes. Thus, this thesis contributes to the advancement of conceptual and theoretical consolidation on the strategic role of artificial intelligence in business scenarios and brings different perspectives, theoretically and empirically, on the use of AI with a positive influence on the value generated for business.
