The National Academy of Engineerings report The Engineer of 2020 published in 2004, proposed the following question: What will or should engineering be like in 2020?. Since then, although researchers, universities, funding agencies and government institutions have dedicated significant efforts and investments to improve engineering education, continuing calls for broader and deeper changes have taken place. The 2020s have arrived and the engineer of the future continues to struggle with a problem from the past: the need to overcome the limits of the classic engineering paradigm, based on Cartesian, mechanistic and reductionist thinking. In other words, despite so much effort and investment, the paradigm remains intact. In this context, this thesis aims to identify and understand proposals and actions that seek alternatives to the classic engineering paradigm, in the fields of research and practice in engineering education. By research in engineering education it refers to scientific production consolidated as Engineering Education Research (EER). By practice in engineering education it refers to any initiative related to teaching and training in engineering carried out within the scope of higher education institutions (e.g., undergraduate and graduate courses, pedagogical projects, modernization programs, teaching models) or representative organizations (e.g., associations, councils, regulatory bodies). To meet the proposed objective, the thesis was divided into three phases: bibliographic (unstructured analysis and systematic literature review), documentary (qualitative content analysis of pedagogical projects, institutional websites, official documents and reports) and field research (interview with professors and coordinators of engineering courses, directors of schools of engineering, heads of educational institutions and members of representative organizations). From the perspective of complexity theory, especially Edgar Morins approach, initially, a concept of paradigm is proposed, in view of the absence of this concept in the discussions on EER, which, it is argued, is fundamentally paradigmatic. The thesis also contributes to the systematization of complexity-based approaches and themes in EER. The interviews allowed to understand the advances in the construction of new paradigms in engineering education through isolated and institutional actions; creation of institutional structures; courses in new modalities of engineering, presenting innovative curricular organization and/or pedagogical approach; and new schools of engineering based on innovative teaching models. The main barriers faced by these proposals/actions were identified, covering issues of different natures (educational, generational, sociocultural, communicational and power). It is hoped that this thesis will contribute to the construction of a new paradigm that complements, adds to the predominant one. A paradigm that is deviant and, if all goes well, rejected at first because, according to Morin, this is the way! For a new paradigm that, on the one hand, threatens not only concepts, ideas and theories, but also the status, prestige, of the engineering of sameness, and, on the other hand, that dialogues with it. For a new paradigm that contributes to the education of the professionals of the future, as they are needed for now.
