Abstract in English
Stainless steels, commercially available since the second decade of the 20th century, are considered irreplaceable engineering materials. Among the different classes, the austenitic stainless steels represent about ¾ of the world production. Most of these materials in their use condition, after the solubilization heat treatment, are not fully austenitic and have a residual volumetric percentage of delta ferrite (), between 0.5 and 5%, which can affect their mechanical and magnetic properties and the corrosion resistance. Aiming at the evaluation of the most used techniques to quantify delta ferrite and to verify how this phase presents itself in the different steps of steelmaking processing, the present work is composed of four main parts. In the first part, fifty-five industrial heats of different austenitic stainless steels and profiles had their delta ferrite content measured and correlated with their mechanical properties. In the second part of the work, a comparative study of the three most used techniques of delta ferrite quantification was carried out for a 304 steel: ferritoscopy, X-ray diffraction and quantitative metallography (QM). In the third part of the work, a systematic study on the evolution, quantity, morphology and distribution of delta ferrite in an 80-ton industrial heat of the 304 steel was carried out, from the continuous casting to the final product - ready for commercialization. In order to evaluate the thermal stability of delta ferrite as a function of temperature for the 304 steel, the material was also evaluated after solubilization heat treatments in the range of 1050°C to 1200°C, in the fourth part of the present study. The analysis of the commercial heats of flat austenitic stainless steels have shown residual delta ferrite predominantly below 1.0 and it was not possible to establish correlation with the material thickness. While the 304 continuous casted slab exhibited delta ferrite ranging from 2.44 to 6.89%, after industrial processing and final solubilization of the product, the material exhibited ferrite between 0.31 and 0.51%. It was verified that the ferrite distribution M-type along the thickness of the slab, reported by the literature and identified in the present work, is maintained even after the thermal and mechanical conformation history of the material. Similarity was observed in the delta ferrite content variation profiles between the measurements performed by QM and ferritoscopy, however, as the industrial processing of the 304 evolves, there was an increase in the divergences between the techniques due to the high deviation of QM measurements and due to the limitation of correction factors available for low percentages of in ferritoscopy. Heat treatments performed between 1050 and 1200 °C were effective to solubilize residual delta ferrite from commercial steel products without promoting excessive grain growth.
