Keywords in Portuguese
Motores ciclo Otto
Motores de combustão interna

Abstract in English
This study determines the best configuration of the geometrical characteristics and materials of the first groove compression piston rings of Otto engines, in order to increase their durability and performance. The focus of this study was on: base material, wear resistant coating materils, working face profile and ring ovality. The influences of these characteristics on the ring wear were determined through the analysis of variance technique, and also the influences on the engine performance concerning the lubricant oil consumption and blow-by were analyzed. The best configuration of the ring for higher durability is composed of nodular cast iron with niobium base material, molybdenum based plasma sprayed coating wirh the addition of chromium carbides, centered barrel face and zero ovality. The best configuration for oil consumption reduction showed asymmetrical barrel face and negative ovality, while for blow-by reduction, the asymmetrical barrel face and zero ovality showed the best results.
