Abstract in English
The phenomenon of corrosion in copper tubes has been observed in several cooling systems, in witch the circulating fluid is purê water. Among these systems, the hidrogenerators cooling circuit is distincted, it occurs through the hollow copper conductors, located at the stator windings, where purê water flows. With the aim to understand and characterize this phenomenon, corrosion conventional experiments were carried out in pre-determined conditions as pH, temperature and the amount of O2 dissolved in pure water. Those tests were done inside recipientes with purê water under N2 atmosphere. The test specimens were removed from e4letrolytic copper rolled-sheets. At the end of experiments, the corrosion rate was calculated through direct measurement of the specimens weight-loss. The corrosion rate of copper depends on the oxygen concentration, temperature and pH of the purê water. The results indicate that an increase in temperature causes a exponential rise in corrosion rate of eletrolytic copper. With the oxigen concentrations between 100 and 500 ppb there is a maximum corrosion rate; with increasing pH, the corrosion rate decreases and about 9,0 is the optimum pH.
