Abstract in English
The influence of solid and liquid lubricants on abrasive wear regimes of carbon steel and cast iron is characterized. Medium carbon steel and spheroidal cast iron were used, both with martensitic microstructure, which presented a hardness between 600 and 700 HV. Glass and alumina abrasives were used to obtain different relationships between abrasive hardness and material hardness, which lead to the occurrence of two abrasives wear regimes. The wear tests were performed in a pin-against-paper system with nominal pressure of 2.83 MPa under lubricated (mineral oil) and non-lubricated conditions. The change of abrasive type (glass to alumina) led to an increase of wear rates and friction coefficients. The results showed that lubricant has a little influence on the abrasive wear rate, but plays an important role in the decreasing of friction coefficient, specially in the mild wear regime. The difference between wear rates values of steel and spheroidal cast iron was insignificant. This trend was also verified for friction coefficient values. The particle size effect was more significant on wear rates in the mild wear regime than in severe regime. On the other hand, its effect on friction coefficient was more significant in the severe regime than in the mild regime. These particle size effects were observed for lubricated and non-lubricated test conditions
