This work presents a mathematical model for steady state simulation of refrigerators and freezers using hermetic alternative compressors, static condensers, roll bond evaporators, and adiabatic or non adiabatic capillary tubes. A mathematical model for each component of the refrigeration system was developed. For the capillary tube, the mass flow rate and the suction line temperature increase are given as a function of operational and geometrical parameters for a characteristic geometry, and then corrected for the actual geometry. The general model of the cycle uses the secant method for convergence of the variables involved. Besides the component models, the general model incorporates also a procedure for evaluation of the refrigerant charge in the system. A computer program called CICLO, to simulate this model, was developed. The program was validated using experimental data provide by a Brazilian manufacturer of refrigerators and freezers. A good agreement between numerical results and experimental data was achieved. The differences between them were in the range of a 3 to 5%. Besides, a sensitivity analysis of the model was carried out, and the performance of the cycle has shown to be very dependent on the refrigerant charge and capillary tube dimensions.
