Abstract in English
This research proposes a theoretical-methodological proposal for the reflection on how the presidential discourse establishes a plot to national identity and contributes to build a country narrative. Right after the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the social pact that lead to Brazilian Federal Constitution, signed in 1988, national identity are again under debate. This thesis established four categories of analysis based on the narrative view of reality and the study of the myths of Brazilian nationality: economy and development, citizenship, Brazil in the world and self-esteem. These categories were used to analyse the presidential discourses of the so-called New Republic (1990-2020). Almost all the presidents analysed had projects to change some narrative figures of the symbolic network of national identity, shedding light on one or another category to overcome national contradictions, always supported by the constitutional text. The only project that proposes to go beyond the agreement stablished at the Constitution was the project of Bolsonaro, which intends to change the figurative core of Brazilian collective identity with a selectivity of groups to be included in its national project. Starting with the analysis of the presidential discourse, we propose an interdisciplinary theoretical path to demonstrate the conformation of the country narrative and how it emerges in reality, trying to reveal the structure of the Brazilian national myths.
