Abstract in English
The Fridays for Future movement gathered over 7 million people in the streets in 2019 by declaring a climate emergency. Under the leadership of the young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, school strikes for climate emerged around the world, with young people suspending their classes to protest for the climate. In 2021, in turn, we witnessed the proliferation of youth activism through the establishment of different environmental collectives and initiatives that engaged both in online and offline actions, turning the climate crisis visible through personal narratives and local perspectives. The participation of these young people is documented on social media, in the news, and in the recent history of international conferences. In light of this, the present research examines the impacts of the Fridays for Future movement in Brazil and its practical developments through the emergence of new initiatives led by young leaders. Through digital ethnography, we present initiatives that arise in different geographical contexts, which highlight their local issues through their own strategies. By adopting a literature review, we approach the concepts of transmedia activism and transmedia organization to gain a broader understanding of the communicative strategies used in the context of platformization. Thus, we conclude that transmedia presents itself as a media literacy that constitutes the communication practices of these youth movements. In particular, we highlight how the Fridays for Future movement in Brazil has gained breadth by showcasing different perspectives on the climate problem, promoting diversity of voices and narratives that describe demands and proposed actions for a global future in a context of ecological collapse.
