Esta dissertação estuda as articulações som-imagem na obra do cineasta escocês-canadense Norman McLaren (1914 1987) através de seus procedimentos de sonorização sintética desenvolvidos a partir da década de 1940. A pesquisa percorre uma linhagem de experimentos envolvendo o som ótico sintético desenvolvidos na primeira metade do século XX na Europa, realiza um apanhado biográfico de McLaren e analisa o uso do som sintético nos filmes Dots (1940), Loops (1940), Mosaic (1965) e Synchromy (1971).

This dissertation studies the sound-image articulations in the work of the Scottish-Canadian filmmaker Norman McLaren (1914 1987) through his synthetic sound procedures developed from the 1940s onwards. The research introduces experiments involving synthetic optical sound developed in the first half of the 20th century in Europe; makes a biographical overview of McLaren and analyzes the use of synthetic sound in the films Dots (1940), Loops (1940), Mosaic (1965) and Synchromy (1971).
