Abstract in English
Inserted in a current and transnational movement to rescue the history of pioneer women in cinema, this doctoral thesis addresses the trajectory of Cleo de Verberena, a Brazilian filmmaker. Born Jacyra Martins da Silveira, in 1904, Cleo de Verberena founded in São Paulo with her husband, Cesar Melani, the EPICA-FILM, company through which she directed and starred her first and only film, the silent feature The Mystery of the Black Domino (1931). Throughout the text, we aimed to think about the relationship between women and cinema in the early twentieth century in a wide and also local way, relating Cleo's experience to that of other pioneers and reflecting on the particularities of Brazilian cinematography in the period. In order to do so, we rely mainly on bibliography on the history of cinema and gender studies and on the findings at the Brazilian National Library, Brazilian Cinematheque and the Cinédia Collection on Cleo de Verberena, as well as on conversations with family members. For recognizing and being recognized by the press of the period as a filmmaker and, for having in fact exhibited a feature film on a commercial circuit, Cleo de Verberena can be considered the first Brazilian filmmaker. We warn, however, that this doctoral thesis does not aim to defend a chronological position in the history of cinema, but only to shed light on the trajectory of this national pioneer.
