Abstract in English
This master's research aims to study and analyze the film Duel (1971), the debut feature by the famous American director Steven Spielberg. Having the films historical and artistic context (that is, the United States of the 1960s and 1970s) as a starting point, the idea presented here is that this film by Spielberg, made originally for the television, complicates and questions the watertight separations between author cinema and commercial cinema, as it resonates with the themes and styles also presented in the works of his New Hollywood contemporaries. To this end, the study examines how American identity issues are presented in the film and its narrative, especially in regard to the key figures of David Mann (played by Dennis Weaver, protagonist of the story) and the Truck (its antagonist), and their relationship with the thriller and western genres and the themes of paranoia, machine and masculinity.
