Keywords in Portuguese
Arthur Omar (1972-1981)
cinema brasileiro moderno
documentário

Abstract in English
This work investigates three of the earlier films by Arthur Omar: Congo (1972), Triste Trópico (1974) and Música Barroca Mineira (1981). We will discuss in which way these films bring together an experimental side, the language of cinema and a critical reflection on Brazil's history. Starting up by their connection to the documentary tradition, the three of them approach a subject related to the national simbolical universe. Congo turns itself to Congos's traditional theater; Triste Trópico pulls together subjects like the Age of Discovery, carnival, messianism and anthropophagy; and Música Barroca Mineira investigates Minas Gerais's musical production from the 18th century. As landmarks of the modern brazilian cinema, each one of these films will be analised through the means they create to deal with art and society.
