Esta pesquisa parte do estudo de um recorte do acervo pioneiro de Albert Kahn, intitulado Arquivos do Planeta (Les Archives de la Planète), produzido em cerca de 50 países entre 1912 e 1931, e que reúne vasta coleção de fotografias e filmes mudos em 35 mm de caráter documental, em cores e em preto e branco. O estudo aqui proposto se concentra em uma seleção de seus cerca de 72 mil autocromos (as fotografias em cores), e é analisado a partir do referencial teórico-metodológico de Vilém Flusser, Luciano Guimarães e outros autores da Teoria da Imagem e da Mídia. A partir da análise desse corpus, pretende-se compreender melhor o papel da cor na imagem técnica, em seu início e em seus reflexos na atualidade, com ênfase em suas funções, características estéticas e de linguagem e consequências na produção de sentido. O objetivo é entender como a evolução técnica e as mudanças estéticas entre preto e branco e colorido refletem enquanto linguagem, e, por consequência, também são reoperadas nas produções fotodocumentais contemporâneas. As hipóteses da pesquisa se concentram em duas vertentes sobre o uso da cor: na representação mais fiel da realidade (um dos objetivos do acervo de Kahn) e na aparente superficialidade de seu emprego majoritário pós advento da indústria gráfica e da era imagética digital (o que também influencia a leitura atual de imagens do passado).

This research is based on the study of an excerpt from Albert Kahns pioneering collection, entitled Archives of the Planet (Les Archives de la Planète), produced in about 50 countries between 1912 and 1931, and which brings together a vast collection of photographs and silent films in 35 mm of documentary character, in color and in black and white. The study proposed here focuses on a selection of approximately 72,000 autochromes (color photographs), analyzed from the theoretical-methodological framework of Vilém Flusser, Luciano Guimarães and other authors of the Theory of Image and Media. From the analysis of this corpus, it is intended to better understand the role of color in the technical image, in its beginning and in its reflections today, with emphasis on its functions, aesthetic and language characteristics and consequences in the production of meaning. The objective is to understand how the technical evolution and the aesthetic changes between black and white and color reflect as a language, and, consequently, are also re-operated in contemporary photodocumentary productions. The research hypotheses focus on two aspects of the use of color: on the most faithful representation of reality (one of the objectives of Kahns collection) and on the apparent superficiality of its majority use after the advent of the graphic industry and the digital imagery era (the which also influences the current reading of images from the past).
