Abstract in English
This thesis aims to investigate the relations between graphic prints that are reproductions of works of art in the press and their impacts on the development of a visual culture in Rio de Janeiro, capital of the empire, during the second half of the 19th century. By that time, the press is more consolidated in the country and there is an increase in the circulation of prints and illustrated publications with artistic themes. The 19th century was an important period for the affirmation of journals as a wide-ranging medium. It was a time of technical improvements, new technologies, and acceleration in transportation and distribution networks that contributed to the journals becoming important elements in the dissemination of images, for the construction of visualities. The 19th century press presented itself as a space for investigation and experimentation, a space that resulted in the development of efficient procedures for image multiplication. Among these images, works of art receive great prominence, being one of the subjects most reproduced by the press. This process takes place at a time of market expansion resulting in cultural exchanges. On the other hand, it was also characterized by a period of strengthening and affirmation of national identities. Rio de Janeiro, which officially implemented its graphics recently, would experience, in the second half of the 19th century, a profusion of images from different categories and themes disseminated by illustrated publications, among which we draw attention to the reproduction of works of art. In this sense, we seek to understand if, and in what way, the reproductions of works of art by the press had an impact on visual culture in Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century.
