'Don?t touch, it?s art': considerações sobre a atividade do espectador no espaço do museu

Abstract in English
This work intends to investigate the question of "public participation" in the new art museums, based on a bibliographic review of some seminal readings on the transformations on the spectator's place. The issues to be addressed stem from a series of concepts presupposed in the relationship between the public and the artwork. We will discuss how the thorough criticism of the idea of contemplation, which takes a radical form from the middle of the 20th century onwards, puts the notion of participation on the spotlight. At the same time, the traditional conception of the museum itself seems to no longer be sufficient to describe the great contemporary artistic-cultural complexes. We consider that a profound transformation in the sphere of culture took place with the emergence and widespread of new artistic and cultural institutions, since the inauguration of the National Museum of Modern Art at the Georges Pompidou Center, which not only marks the appearance of new forms of exhibition of works, but also calls for the emergence of new attitudes from the public towards art collections and exhibitions in general. We will seek to propose a look upon these contemporary phenomena, based on readings that point out the tensions that were already running through the history of the museum space and the spectator's activity.
