Abstract in English
This dissertation investigates the Brazilian cultural environment of the 1960s and the potential resonances between that setting and the term Pop Art. It studies how the term was coined at the end of the 1950s, its association with a group of artists from New York City, and its relevance in Brazilian culture. It analyzes the movement of foreign pop artists at the IX Biennial of São Paulo in 1967, along other exhibitions of the period, tracing a map of the cultural atmosphere in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The works of Antonio Dias from the 1960s embody the border between the symbols of popular culture and the growing cultural industry in Brazil, between the violent political reality of the military dictatorship and the rich cultural environment of Rio de Janeiros arts institutions. Alternatively, Mira Schendels work from the same period opened itself to experimental discoveries from surrounding materials, incorporating cut outs from contemporary journals and magazines in collages.
